It may sound strange, but condom is a mean of mid-level realibility. The matter is that only the condoms bought in a drugstore are reliable if kept and used properly. Condom is the only method protecting from sexually transmitted infections, but unfortunately it cannot be named a reliable contraceptive (but we thought it is absolute reliable, didnt we?) Index-18

Hormonal contraceptives is the most effective method of family planning.
In modern world birth control pills are the most spread contraceptives. They are very easy to use (you only have to take a pill once a day) and very effective. Only surgeon sterilization is more effective than hormonal contraception. How does it work? Oral contraceptives contain analogues of female hormones. When these hormones get into a womans organism they create an illusion of pregnancy (it turns out that it is possible to be a little pregnant). As a result the ovaries stop to produce ovules, thus pregnancy is impossible. Modern birth control pills can be used by middle aged and young women.Index 1.
What does emergency contraception mean?
It often happens that sex is unexpected and neither the boy nor the girl has a contraceptive at hand. Or the barrier method does not work the condom deteriorates. What should be done in such a situation?
You should not just hope for the best. The measures should be taken immediately, in the nearest 72 hours. The best solution is to see the gynaecologist the morning after the unprotected intercourse. Perhaps the doctor will prescribe you a morning after pill. This preparation will help you avoid unwilling pregnancy and abortion.
Unfortunately many girls overdo emergency contraception. It provokes quite unpleasant side effects. It is allowed to take after morning pills only when there is only one choice: either abortion or emergency contraception.
These pills cannot be used regularly! There are much better means for this purpose.
